Steam Driven is a boutique that is owned by MY House, and all the profit made from Steam Driven will go to helping homeless teens. We came up with the idea to upcycle clothing when we were receiving such a large amount of clothing donations from the community. If we get clothing that could have an amplified style or that we can’t use for our age group, we use the material and create other things.
After our teens complete goals and accomplish tasks, such as getting a drivers license, and meeting with their case manager, they can be eligible to get an clothes, food, or hygiene products if they need to. The store is operated by teens, and most of the designs are also created by them. They are educated by a volunteer seamstress how to sew and create elegant pieces of clothing.
What is Steampunk?
Steampunk fashion has no set guidelines, but tends to synthesize modern styles with influences from the Victorian era. Steampunk-influenced outfits are usually accented with several technological and “period” accessories: timepieces, parasols, flying/driving goggles, and ray guns. Modern accessories like cell phones or music players can be found in steampunk outfits, after being modified to give them the appearance of Victorian-made objects. Aspects of steampunk fashion have been anticipated by mainstream high fashion, the Lolita fashion and aristocrat styles, neo-Victorianism, and the romantic gothic subculture.
